Over the past few years, a new trend has been gaining popularity in the realm of beauty and skin care: Microneedling. The benefits are plenty - from collagen production, to treating hyperpigmentation and scaring, combating signs of ageing and improving skin texture, luminosity and appearance. Our resident skin specialist and Hydrafacial therapist Lauren Lavers explains why winter is the perfect time to get on board and start a course of microneedling treatments.
What is Microneedling:
Microneedling is clinically proven to help stimulate collagen production. It is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses tiny needles which create microchannels in the skin, allowing nourishing ingredients to penetrate and resurface. Microneedling has gained popularity for its growing list of benefits. It rejuvenates and plumps the skin with minimal discomfort and minimal downtime, and it can be adjusted to fit each person’s needs. This process stimulates the skin's immune response, which triggers a healing response and fires up the fibroblasts, which develop and mature collagen. The number of treatments needed varies from person to person, but a course of 3- 6 treatments is often recommended. Then, sessions once every 3 - 4 months are advised to maintain results.
Why is winter the best time to try Microneedling?
Winter brings many different concerns for the skin, such as dryness, roughness and lack of glow. This is why microneedling is a great choice of treatment as an antidote to all this. With the UV index being lower during the winter, we recommend clients take advantage of the cooler temperatures to treat more advanced skin concerns, such as hyperpigmentation. Being out in the sun can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which negates the purpose of trying to achieve an even skin tone, without delivering more damage to the skin.
Dryness:
Microneedling increases cellular turnover and aids in lifting away that top dry surface to let active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides and vitamins sink into the skin and deliver nourishment to deeper layers.
Texture:
Microneedling is clinically proven to improve the appearance of enlarged pores, reduce the depth of fine lines and even smooth out acne scarring. This is done by building new collagen, lifting away rougher skin, and thickening the skin, dramatically improving overall texture.
Lack of glow:
The glow and radiance of the skin come from light reflection, this is reduced when the skin is dry. The texture becomes rough and the moisturising ingredients used at home cannot penetrate through the layers of dead skin. Microneedling will boost your skin, and your aesthetician will use a cocktail of vitamins and AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids) to brighten your skin. This is perfect for achieving healthy, radiant skin, and make you look and feel at your best.
What can you treat with Microneedling?
Microneedling can treat many skin concerns such as acne, scarring, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, ageing, and thinning hair. We also have many clients loyal to this treatment who have no skin concerns, but see the real benefits of stimulating their collagen production, which naturally decreases from around the age of 30; and boosting their overall skin health.
